US Senate adds Iran to sanctions bill on Russia

U.S. senators have included financial sanctions against Iran in the bipartisan sanctions package against Russia.

According to Politico, Senate Majority Leader John Thune said this, Ukrinform reports.

"It was a late add. I think everybody's fine with it because we would do it anyway. Iran sanctions is something we've had in place for the last 30 years," Thune said.

Senators have been working for several months on a bipartisan bill imposing sanctions against Russia and countries that buy Russian oil. Recently, work on the document intensified thanks to the efforts of Senator Lindsey Graham, who was one of the main supporters of the bill.

Thune expressed confidence that the Senate would be able to pass the updated sanctions package before the start of the August recess.

"I've been having conversations with Democrats and folks on our side, and I think we're homing in on it. So I'm hoping we can get it teed up, and then if we could get some sort of limited time agreement to help expedite it on the floor, that would help too," the majority leader said.

As Ukrinform reported, U.S. President Donald Trump said that Republicans should include Iran in the sanctions bill against Russia.

The bill drafted by Senator Lindsey Graham to strengthen anti-Russian sanctions will provide for 100 percent secondary sanctions against countries that buy Russian oil and natural gas, and will also target Russia's shadow fleet.
