Canada extends its temporary migration program for Ukrainians

Canada has prolonged the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET), which allows Ukrainians to live and work in Canada.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent, this was announced in Ottawa by Canada's Minister of Immigration, Lena Metlege Diab.

Diab stated that as Russia's war against Ukraine continues, Canada would keep supporting displaced Ukrainians through the CUAET program by extending its validity, adding that the program allows this group of people to work and contribute to Canada's economy while they are in the country.

Her ministry clarified that Ukrainians who arrived in Canada under the CUAET program before March 31, 2024, will be able to apply until March 31, 2027, for a three-year extension of their work and residence permits.

It is worth noting that the CUAET program was launched in early March 2022. It allowed any Ukrainian wishing to do so to obtain a temporary permit to live and work in Canada. Applications for the program closed three years ago, but during its operation, more than 298,000 Ukrainian asylum seekers arrived in Canada. Since Canada does not track departures from the country, there is no exact data on how many Ukrainians remain there.

As Ukrinform previously reported, last month a petition was submitted to the Canadian Parliament calling for all Ukrainian asylum seekers who arrived after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion to be granted permanent resident status.
