Zelensky explains why peace treaty must include specific date for EU Accession

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he insists on a specific date for Ukraine's accession to the European Union being fixed in a peace treaty, because otherwise Russia, through its representatives, will slow down this process.

Zelensky stated this during a press conference, Ukrinform's correspondent reports.

"I want a specific date. I am absolutely convinced that if the agreement signed by America, Russia – namely Putin – myself as President of Ukraine, and Europe does not contain a date, then Russia will later do everything to block this process. And not even with its own hands, but through certain representatives of Europe," Zelensky said.

He noted that an example of such a situation is the current inability to open negotiation clusters.

"You and I are witnessing relevant things when clusters are not being opened, there were problems with candidate status…Therefore, for us, once again, the EU means specifics, because these are security guarantees," he stressed.

He also emphasized that Ukraine will do everything to be technically ready for accession by 2027. "At least we will accomplish the main things," Zelensky said.

As Ukrinform reported, citing Bloomberg, the European Union is considering a number of options for including Ukraine's membership in a future peace agreement.

According to sources, the options under consideration include EU membership as well as immediate access for Kyiv to certain rights of a bloc member. The interlocutors added that the EU could provide Ukraine with clear timelines for completing the steps required to advance the formal accession procedure.

Sources noted that other options being considered include continuing the current accession path or introducing a transitional period and gradual membership.
