Stubb says US' ideology contradicts European values

Europe and Finland must acknowledge that the United States is changing and that the ideology of the U.S. administration underpinning its foreign policy "conflicts with our own values."

According to Ukrinform, Reuters stated this in an article, citing Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

"We must honestly acknowledge that the United States is undergoing change. Its approach to its allies, as well as its way of conducting foreign policy, is also changing," Stubb said in a speech to members of parliament.

As examples of such changes, Stubb cited the U.S. undermining the existing international order, operating outside international institutions, and downplaying the importance of Europe.

At the same time, he called the United States "an important ally."

Stubb said that Finland will update its foreign and security policy doctrine to reflect changes in the international situation. He did not specify a timeline for the review, noting that work with the government is only beginning.

Stubb has sought to maintain close relations with Trump in order to secure his support for Ukraine amid Russia's invasion and to strengthen Finland's security as a neighboring country of Russia.

European NATO members, including Finland, have been reviewing their foreign policy strategies in recent weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump fueled tensions with European allies in January over Greenland, an overseas territory belonging to Denmark.

As Ukrinform previously reported, EU institutions are studying how European armies and defense agencies can securely share information without the involvement of the United States.
