Ukrainians celebrate Vyshyvanka Day

Today, on the third Thursday of May, Ukrainians traditionally celebrate Vyshyvanka Day.

This day is not official, but it is celebrated in Ukraine and abroad by Ukrainians and all people who are fond of us and our culture.

The Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University students initiated the event. In 2006, they proposed to dedicate one day of the year to the Ukrainian embroidered shirt.

It could be said that the holiday existed and was celebrated in a narrow circle, but in 2014 it went beyond the circle of conscious Ukrainian students and beyond Ukraine itself.

Ukrainian vyshyvanka, along with Ukrainian pysanka, is one of the vivid symbols of Ukrainian culture. In addition, wearing an embroidered shirt demonstrates not only its beauty and uniqueness but also your belonging to the centuries-old Ukrainian cultural tradition.

The third Thursday of May was not chosen by chance. The event's founders insist that Vyshyvanka Day should fall on a weekday, not a weekend, emphasizing that embroidery is an organic part of Ukrainian life and culture, not a covered with naphthalene artifact.

On this day, interesting online contests are traditionally held, such as "Best Vyshyvanka" or "Best Photo" in an embroidered shirt. Photos in embroidery are posted online not only by residents of Ukraine but also by Ukrainians abroad.
