U.S. President Donald Trump responded with sarcasm to Vladimir Putin’s claim that new sanctions against Russia would not affect its economy.

Trump made the remark during a meeting with journalists at the White House, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

Reporters asked the U.S. leader what he thought about Putin’s statement that the latest U.S. sanctions would have no serious impact on Russia’s economy.

“I'm glad he feels that way. That's good,” the President said wryly.

“I'll let you know about it in six months from now,” he added.

As reported earlier, on Wednesday the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against Russia’s two largest oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. Washington also urged Moscow to immediately agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

On Thursday, the White House stated that the new sanctions targeting Russia’s major oil companies would put significant pressure on its economy and push other countries to stop buying Russian energy.
