The international community must by no means allow Ukraine to be defeated in its war with Russia and should instead demonstrate determination.

Canadian Senator Rebecca Patterson said this in Ottawa, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

She stressed that the task of Western nations was to ensure that any potential aggressor, regardless of origin, clearly understood that Western capability and resolve would deny them victory and make the price of aggression unacceptable. Patterson noted that Russian leader Vladimir Putin must not be led to believe that his aggression could succeed, as the cost of such actions should remain unacceptable.

The senator said that this goal could be achieved collectively. She stressed that Ukraine deserves peace, not forced capitulation, and not just any peace, but a lasting and just peace on Ukrainian terms, since Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state.

She noted that Ukraine's victory in the war would represent a victory for everyone.

During his visit to Kyiv last week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would soon deliver a new package of weapons worth $1 billion to Ukraine.
