Macron: Europeans must take their fair share in providing security guarantees for Ukraine

He stated this during talks at the White House on Monday, August 18, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Everybody around this table is in favor of peace and we work very hard and we've worked very hard during the past few years to have a peace which is a robust and long-standing peace," Macron said.

He added that after a trilateral meeting, a quadrilateral meeting will be needed to address security guarantees for Europe as well.

"I think as a follow-up, we would need probably a quadrilateral meeting because when we speak about security guarantees, we speak about the whole security of the European continent and this is why we are all united here with Ukraine on this matter," Macron said.

The French leader underscored his support for a truce and ceasefire, but stressed that lasting peace requires security guarantees.

"The first one is clearly a credible Ukrainian army for the years and decades to come. The second one is our own commitments," he said.

According to Macron, Europeans fully recognize that they must take their fair share of responsibility for providing these guarantees to Ukraine, since this also concerns their own security.

An expanded-format meeting took place at the White House on Monday with the participation of the presidents of the United States and Ukraine, along with European leaders who arrived in Washington to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.
