Ukraine’s Parliament approves Svyrydenko as Prime Minister

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to a Telegram post by MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak.

A total of 262 MPs supported Svyrydenko’s appointment.

With this decision, Yuliia Svyrydenko becomes the 19th Prime Minister of Ukraine and the second woman in the country’s history to hold the post.

As reported earlier, Svyrydenko was born on December 25, 1985, in Chernihiv. Since 2015, she held various leadership positions in the Chernihiv Regional State Administration, including head of the Department of Economic Development and first deputy head of the administration. From July to December 2018, she served as acting head of the regional administration.

In 2019–2020, she was Deputy Minister and then First Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Trade, and Agriculture.

On December 22, 2020, she was appointed Deputy Head of the Office of the President by presidential decree.

On November 4, 2021, the Verkhovna Rada appointed Svyrydenko as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy.

On July 14, President Zelensky, during a meeting with Svyrydenko, proposed that she head the Cabinet of Ministers.

On July 16, the Verkhovna Rada supported the resignation of Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. As per procedure, the entire Cabinet resigned along with him.

Shmyhal held the post for five years, making him the longest-serving Prime Minister in the history of independent Ukraine (since March 4, 2020).

On July 16, during a closed meeting of the Servant of the People faction with the participation of the President and Parliament leaders, the proposed candidates for Prime Minister and Cabinet positions were presented.
