Ukraine to decide what terms of peace it can accept, German Foreign Ministry says

Germany supports Ukraine’s direct participation in any negotiations aimed at ending Russia’s aggression, as it is for Ukraine itself to determine the terms of peace it can accept.

Kathrin Deschauer, Spokesperson for Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, said this at a government press conference in Berlin on Thursday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

“Ultimately, it is Ukraine that will decide what kind of peace is acceptable to it. But, of course, this is only possible if those directly affected play a key role,” Deschauer stressed.

She was responding to journalists’ questions about possible talks between the United States and Russia and concerns that decisions concerning Ukraine could be made without Ukraine’s participation.

The Foreign Office Spokesperson emphasized that Berlin has consistently advocated for Ukraine’s involvement in any diplomatic process aimed at ending the war.

“We have also always said that any such negotiations must, of course, involve the Ukrainians themselves. That would be the right approach. That is the right way forward,” she said.

Meanwhile, German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius, commenting on reports of a proposal to hold a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the German government had no independent information about the initiative and knew of it only from media reports.

At the same time, he noted that Ukraine had already put forward sufficient diplomatic initiatives to end the war and that a diplomatic settlement was impossible without its participation.

“I think Ukraine has put forward no shortage of proposals for bringing this war to a diplomatic end. It would make sense to respond to these proposals, because the war can only be ended through diplomacy with the participation of the country that was attacked,” Kornelius stressed.

As Ukrinform reported, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during his visit to Uzbekistan, confirmed that discussions had taken place about a possible meeting between the leaders of the United States, Russia and China.
