German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss anti-corruption efforts and the growing number of young Ukrainian men arriving in EU countries.

The details of the discussion were published on the official website of the German government, Ukrinform reports.

Zelensky informed Merz about the corruption investigations against members of his government who have since resigned, pledging full transparency, long-term support for independent anti-corruption agencies, and further swift measures to regain the trust of the Ukrainian people, European partners, and international donors, according to the press release.

Merz, in turn, "emphasized the German government's expectation that Ukraine would vigorously pursue the fight against corruption and further reforms, particularly in the area of the rule of law."

According to the German government, the leaders also discussed the situation of Ukrainian refugees, including the recent rise in the number of young Ukrainian men leaving for the European Union.

Zelensky also thanked Merz for Germany's support, especially in bolstering Ukraine's air defense and protecting its energy infrastructure.

Chancellor Merz and President Zelensky agreed to continue joint efforts toward a ceasefire and lasting peace in close coordination with European and transatlantic partners. Germany, together with its Western partners, will increase pressure on Moscow to compel Russia to enter into serious negotiations. This includes continuing work on a more effective use of Russia's immobilized state assets.
