EU accession: Zelensky discusses timeline for opening next clusters with Costa and von der Leyen

“The head of state thanked the European Union for opening the first negotiation cluster for Ukraine and Moldova. Volodymyr Zelensky called this an important step in supporting our country and, at the same time, a strong and clear signal to Russia and its attempts to divide Europe,” the statement said. 

The leaders discussed the schedule for opening the next five clusters and further steps toward Ukraine’s European integration.

As noted, the meeting also addressed the implementation of the financial support package and preparations for the disbursement of the first tranche. Ukraine expects to receive the funds as early as this month and to use them to strengthen its defenses against Russian aggression. 

Particular attention was paid to tightening sanctions against Russia. The leaders discussed the European Union’s 21st sanctions package, which targets the energy sector, trade, the financial sector, and cryptocurrency. 

In addition, the President of Ukraine and EU leaders discussed diplomatic efforts to achieve peace. The parties agreed that Europe must be represented at the negotiating table.

“The Head of State emphasized that, as long as Russia intends to continue the war, Ukraine’s air defense must be strengthened and work must be done to coordinate security guarantees for our country,” the Office of the President concluded.

As reported by Ukrinform, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka stated that following the opening of the first negotiation cluster on Ukraine’s accession to the EU, the remaining five are ready for formal consideration, and their opening could take place in the coming weeks.
