A boy, who was born and grown up in Tbilisi, on "Plekhanovi", who listened to Luciano Pavarotti for the first time on TV at the age of 15, conquered the same stage where the legendary Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti was singing for thirty years! And today, world-recognized baritone, Giorgi Gagnidze is a leading solist of New York's Metropolitan Opera, a dream of all singers, and a glorious successor of Georgian vocal traditions.
In his time, he studied well at the 24th Music School, but he never expressed much interest in terms of Opera. Listening and seeing of Paliashvili's "Abesalom and Ether" at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater together with his father became decisive and made great impression on him. He was enrolled to the Tbilisi Conservatory in 1991. That student's period coincided with a war and a difficult socio-political situation. His teacher was a singer Tamaz Laperashvili. However, this is the time when both lecturers and students used to go on lectures whenever it was possible. Despite this difficult period of time, students, including Giorgi, were looking forward to the future with hope.
Three years after matriculating at the Conservatory, Giorgi Gagnidze became a solist of the Tbilisi Opera and under the guidance of Maesto Jansug Kakhidze he was singing the leading parties for nearly a decade! In 2000, he obtained a great success at the Elena Obraztsova International Competition in St. Petersburg. The 2005 was even more significant and successful, when he won the contest "Verdi's Voices" in Busseto and became the favorite singer for the well-known Spanish tenor, Jose Careras:
"I moved to the second round, where we were singing only arias from Verdi's operas. Jose Careras came up to me for getting acquainted. As usual, it happens very seldom, when the chairperson of the jury gets closer and speaks with the contestant. This isn't admissible even under the rules, but Careras told me that the aria of Renato from "Ball-Masquerade" performed by me was very excited and he could not endure not to come and congratulate me."
Just after winning the Busseto contest, the Georgian singer paved the way to the opera stages of New York, Milan, Berlin, Paris, Hamburg or Vienna. The Japan tour along with the famous conductor, Maestro Lorin Maazel turned out to be special. Maazel is the greatest conductor of the twentieth century who used to be the main conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and La Scale.
On tours in Japan, Giorgi Gagnidze sang with great success the parts of George Germont in "Traviata" and Scarpia in "Tosca". Afterwards, he was personally invited to Valencia by Maazel, where a new opera house was opened shortly before. This is the first time, when Giorgi Gagnidze performed the part of Simon Boccanegra in the opera of the same name by Verdi.
In 2007 he performed the part of Germont in La Scala for one more time. This concert was attended by Peter Gelb, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera, who, at the same day, invited Giorgi Gagnidze to sing in Metropolitan Opera. Since 2008, the Georgian baritone has been making a path to Metropolitan with a magnificent performance of "Rigoletto" part, that was followed by Scarpia in "Tosca", Amonasro in "Aida", Iago in "Othello". The singer's repertoire is scheduled for the end of 2020, and the vocal calendar is fully completed. So anyone who wants to hear and see him, should take measures in advance.
Lots of reviews have been written about Giorgi Gagnidze and are still being published in various magazines and papers in America and Europe, that certainly support his career in European and American opera stages. "It was a very big achievement. I would never believe, that I would ever see myself on a big screen in front of the Metropolitan Theater. It is the dream of all singers to sing on the stage of Metropolitan Opera, and beyond all above mentioned is meant a hard work. As far as the competition is great, it is so difficult to establish yourself on an opera stage and to create an independent artistic career. Even more difficult is to gain sympathy of critics and spectators," states Giorgi Gagnidze.
It is more than ten years since Giorgi Gagnidze has been living in Germany with his family. His wife, Maia Gogoladze is a physician and simultaneously a musician. Children - Mariam and David are already actively involved and interested in music. Despite the busy schedule, Giorgi still arrives in Georgia and participates in opera performances or charity concerts. As an example of this, we can mention an unforgettable Aida at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater, where his partners were Anita Rachvelishvili, Giorgi Oniani and Iano Alibegashvili. He participated in concerts held within the frames of charity fund "Iavnana" as well.
