Slovakia has automatically extended temporary protection for people who fled Ukraine due to Russia's full-scale war until March 4, 2027.

That is according to SME.sk, Ukrinform reports.

Slovakia's Ministry of Interior said the decision was adopted in line with an implementing decision of the Council of the European Union. At the national level, the extension was formalized by a government decree dated February 21, 2025.

The validity of temporary protection can be checked via the ministry's online portal.

The ministry explained that after registration, individuals receive an A4-format paper confirmation. This document serves as a temporary residence certificate and is valid for up to 90 days while the residence card is being issued.

If an application for a residence card was not submitted during initial registration – for example, due to the absence of a delivery address – it can be filed later. In such cases, applicants must make a new appointment through the ministry's reservation system.

Temporary protection grants the right to reside in Slovakia, as well as access to healthcare, education, and the labor market.

Since March 2022, the European Union has offered shelter to more than four million displaced Ukrainians. Refugees from Ukraine will benefit from temporary protection in the EU until March 4, 2027.

Last September, the Council of the EU approved a common framework for displaced Ukrainians aimed at ensuring their sustainable return and reintegration into Ukraine when conditions permit, as well as a gradual transition to other residence statuses for those eligible.
